“Vol.II” - Angine de Poitrine

Released April 3, 2026 through Angine de Poitrine.
File under: experimental psychedelic math-rock

I think I can safely say I can divide my life into two parts:

1. Life before Angine de Poitrine
2. Life after Angine de Poitrine

From utter obscurity, this speckled and costumed duo have invaded the social media of anyone paying attention to music, and rightly so; their music is dynamic, refreshing, and very, very strange. After a dazzlingly deranged live performance for KEXP went viral and garnered millions of views back in February, it seems everyone has been talking about Angine de Poitrine.

Never without thier spotty costiumes, and performing under the pseudonyms of guitarist Khn de Poitrine and drummer Klek de Poitrine, this Quebecois pair cascade through a dizzying sound-maze of microtonal guitar and bass licks accompanied by very complex math-rock drumming. Listening to them is intriguing, fascinating, unexpected, and ultimately, an unequaled joy to behold.

Vol.II is their second album, which is musically part jazz, part math-rock, part psychedelia, and part art-pop. Sound-wise people have compared them to Primus meets King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard meets King Crimson, citing a plethora of other influences and sounds the pop up in their music.

A typical song by Angine de Poitrine would build from a drum beat and a bassline being laid down and looped, followed by microtonal guitar track, which is also then looped, and overlaid again by another microtonal guitar track, occasionally interjected with an alien-like distorted vocal; then the fun starts, as the drummer flips the 4/4 beat with a double-time 5/8 beat, all without missing a beat. Their songs typically do for around 6 minutes which means that the 7 track album Vol.II goes for a total of 36 minutes.
