“U” - underscores

Released march 20, 2026 through Mom+Pop.File under: hyperpop/electropop

underscores is the nom de plume of 25 year old San Fraciscan native April Harper Grey, and U is the third full length release from her, the follow up from 2024’s awesome concept album Wallsocket, which was about characters from and set in a fictional Idaho town called Wallsocket. This album is much more straightforward and feels like is itMuch like underscores’ previous albums, U is a tour de force of staccato beats an effected vocal tracks, frenetic but not frantic, the electro beats and synths building to very satisfying crescendos, with just enough glitch to scratch that itch, and enough pop to keep it singable.

Some parts risqué, but all digestible, it’s all very self aware and topical; music about being a musician, music about music, music about the music industry. She’s a pop star, and she acts like it. And it’s a masterly pop album, far less brooding and moody than Wallsocket.

From the single track Music:

“Last night, I had a wet dream 'bout the perfect songI know, I know, I'm too far goneO-opened my eyes and forgot all of the notesBy any chance, do you know how it goes?”

If you want a great pop album, with a glitchy edge, you could do worse than U by underscores.
